Jyoti and Lan‘s cultural backgrounds added masala, or spice, to the wedding celebration (she‘s Indian; he‘s Vietnamese). The morning before the main event, Jyoti and Lan hosted a Vietnamese wedding ceremony at the bride‘s family home in Louisiana. Per tradition, Lan‘s family presented gifts to Jyoti‘s family, then the groom asked for formal permission of Jyoti‘s hand in marriage, and finally the pair drove to Lan‘s home to pay respect to his ancestors.
After the Vietnamese wedding customs, Jyoti changed into an intricately bejeweled ivory lengha -- a blouse, long flowing skirt, and embroidered cloth that is worn as a wrap. "For Indian brides," Jyoti says, "the typical color is red. But I chose a white lengha to represent my dual American and Indian heritage." Jyoti purchased her authentic Indian wedding garb at an Indian bridal boutique in Vancouver, Canada.
Kicking off the official wedding ceremony, Jyoti and Lan participated in a Jai Mala ceremony, where they symbolized their union by exchanging garlands. Each garland contained at least 100 red and white carnations, which were hand strung by the bride and groom‘s closest friends. During the culturally infused service, both Jyoti and Lan walked around the traditional Hindu wedding fire seven times to represent various wedding wishes, and listened to family and friends deliver seven readings about love, friendship, happiness, laughter, and family.
The moonlit sky and the warm wedding colors (red and silver -- which represent love and marriage in both Vietnamese and Indian cultures) created the perfect illumination for this evening reception. As female guests arrived to the plantation‘s outdoor area, a young gentleman handed beautiful red roses to each one before they entered. Before the wedding, Jyoti and Lan had asked their guests to send them photos of themselves to be used as framed centerpieces, which were accompanied by red rose-filled silver vases and blue glass tea light holders.
Following the local-inspired feast, a four-tiered polka dot and ribbon wedding cake decorated with fresh red roses was served. Guests enjoyed different flavors on each tier: strawberry, pineapple, cream cheese, and raspberry.
It was a prescription for love: Doctors Jyoti Sharma and Lan Pham celebrated both their marriage and cultural diversity in front of 120 friends and family members at a classic Louisiana plantation.

After a four-year friendship during medical school, secret admirer Lan confessed his feelings for fellow classmate Jyoti by sending her a CD. It swept her off her feet. "Once I found out Lan was my secret admirer, I fell in love with him and his romantic nature," says Jyoti. They began to date even though Lan would soon begin his residency in Baton Rouge and Jyoti would be on her way to Seattle.

When Lan planned to propose after two years of long-distance dating, he was inspired by a dream Jyoti once had. "I was going off to war," Lan recalls, "and I left her a message to meet me in the fields before I shipped out." Instead of a rendezvous in the fields, the anxious suitor left a message for Jyoti to meet him at the base of the Space Needle in Seattle. They then went for a ride on a Ferris wheel, where Lan surprised Jyoti with a proposal at the top. "I was so happy and filled with tears," Jyoti says. "Of course I said yes!"
